The Hannibal passage with elephants through the Moncenisio pass is very famous. Also Julius Caesar in 58 B.C. crossed this pass during his 8 days journey from Rome to Geneva. Then he decided to build a more suitable road: the "Via Cottia per Alpem" which started from Torino and passed through Susa,(Segusium) Oulx (Villa Martis), Cesana (Gadaone or Gaesao) and reached the dangerous throats of Claviere. This road remained a simple mule-track during the Middle Ages until the napoleonic period. Here was born the village of Claviere (Las Clavieras in the Middle Ages)

The most famous Claviere’s skiing tracks are the Serra Granet-La Coche (easy), the red Gimont and the black track of Pian del Sole. In Claviere you can also find a track for country ski, which is about 5 km and is linked to the french itinerary Montgenevre (16km).

The city of Claviere lies in Alta Valle Susa at 1760 m a.s.l. and is a famous skiing resort, plenty of ski-slopes for both cross-country and alpine skiing. It is set in the "Via Lattea" and offers a large choice of ski-slopes:

  • Serra Granet-La Coche ( almost easy )
  • Gimont e
  • Pian del Sole.
  • It is approx. 97 km from Torino and it boasts 169 inhabitants on a mountain surface of 267 Ha.
Also the resort offers door step skiing from the Hotel Roma, ~
